After my last post, I have unfortunately run into another Twilight fan in my grade.
I'm an officer for a club at my school and today we were putting together candy cane grams which we do each year. There's this one girl in the club who is a little... Slow, shall we say? I don't know her that well but after her comment today, I'm ready to call her more than just "slow."
I don't remember how but the topic of Twilight came up. I, of course, started on a mini rant.
Me: I hate Twilight. It's completely sexist.
Other Girl: How is it sexist?
Annoying Girl: It's not sexist! It's a love story!
Me: Bella is completely dependent on Edward. She tries to kill herself because he leaves her.
AG: That's only because she loves him! She jumps off the cliff because she loves him!
Me: Twilight is about as much as a love story as Romeo & Juliet. They're both about lust, not love! And Bella is anything but a strong female character: it's completely anti-feminist.
And that's when I ended the conversation. There are some new freshmen in the club and I didn't want to scare them away completely XD
But seriously, She jumped off the cliff because she loved him? Who the hell thinks this is normal?S

Brief explanation: MSTers are my roleplay/MMO characters (or, my MMO character and her AI ally) and Izumi is the human half of a supernatural romance, herself, putting her in the best position to point out the flaws of Edward and Bella's relationship by comparing it to her own.
In which Bella's character itself finally comes under fire.
I hope you enjoy!

Everyone had such amazing contributions to the Twilight Oath Post that I had to compile them into their own special oath. If I missed yours or if you have another one, leave it in the comments! This thing has taken on a life of its own.

Several times in this community it has been posted that one of the reasons Twatlight is terrible is because it teaches girls and women that they need a MAN to ever be happy...which of course is bullshit.
However, some people say that a woman does not need a man or a woman to be happy, she can be happy by herself as well. I'm not sure if I agree with this: humans are highly social creatures. I know no one is suggesting that the woman can be happy being totally isolated from the rest of humanity, but I think a woman (and any other human being) needs a close companion of some sort.
I know that personally I could not stand not being close to someone, it would probably make me depressed.
Thoughts?

Instead of throwing all my RP characters at it, I decided to use just one - the one in a supernatural romance, herself - the best position from which to bash Twilight.
Here you go.

Disclaimer: I have a laundry list of mental disorders, and i still found the original post funny.
Alright, so someone posted this on MyLifeIsAverage:
Earlier this week, I had been sent to the nurse after donating blood. As I lay on my side for 15 minutes, I proceeded to read all the health posters on the wall. One of them said "Signs of Mental Illness: social isolation, lack of appetite, bizarre behavior, and irrational decisions." I now realize what Bella from New Moon is promoting. MLIA
I actually clicked the comments to read them, something I don't usually do because it's gotten full of hateful responses like "god I hate cliches"(hello, cliches are average).
I found this thread gem(my thoughts in bold):
Person A: how would you all like it if your boyfriend left you?It would suck, and then I would wallow for a week and that would be it, I'd go try to get over it. put aside the whole vampire thing. i don't think you would be too happy. No, I wouldn't, but I wouldn't become a statuezombie with night terrors that sound like contractions, either so just SHUT UP about twilight, i'm sick of hearing about it. if you excuse me, im going to go read harry potter. THATS RIGHT. I LIKE BOTH. GASP, BECAUSE YOU ARE THE FIRST ONE EVER TO LIKE BOTH. OMG. STOP THE PRESSES
Person B's response to that: My ex left me after 4.5 years. I didn't go months of walking in a zombie state and trying to kill myself to hear his voice. I grieved and was depressed, but not to the degree of Bella. It's not healthy to have the level of obsession she did. She should be seeing a psychotherapist, not a werewolf.-clapclap- very well done, madam.
Person C's response to person B: It wasn't a boyfriend. It was her souldmate.HER SOULDMATE, GUYS, SOULDMATE, DIDN'TCHA KNOW? THAT'S EVEN MORE IMPORTANT THAN A SOULMATE True love. The only reason Edward was turned into a vampire is because he was SUPPOSED to be with Bella (at least that's what I got from it)....um. okay then. If it was just another boyfriend, then yes, it would be bad. But it's not. But what I find humorous is that in romeo and juliet, didn't juliet commit suicide when romeo died (never read the book or seen the movie, just what I've heard) so why is that considered a beautiful love story, where as twilight is an example of an unhealthy relationship?because of something called good writing and hundreds of other things that I'm not going to even try to mention.
Also from Person C, in response to the original post: You said that as if mental illness is a choice, that people choose to have eating disorders and depression and other illnesses. They don't.Okay, well, that's technically correct, even though it's said in a rather simplified way. It is an ILLNESS, just as the Flu is an illness, Cancer is an illness, and Aids is an illnessNo. Mental disorders are DISORDERS. The flu is caused by a virus, and cancer is (most of the time) genetic, while AIDS is a contracted DISEASE. To say something is promoting mental illness downplays the seriousness of it, which could cause people to die. Bet your proud of this post now. Sorry, I took it out of context, but seriously, its disgusting.
..............um. Yeah, because I can take some meds and my Bipolar and OCD just ~*Magically*~ go away. With ~*~*Magic*~*~

Sorry if this has been posted before. I went back a couple entries and didn't see them. But if they have, please consider this a reminder of a great holiday gift! /sarcasm. I saw these in Tribute. I now need to go read Dans Blogging Twilight to fight the rage that it has been made into Barbie collectibles.

"The movie Twilight tells the tale of teenage romance between mortal Bella Swan and the intriguing and dazzlingly beautiful vampire, Edward Cullen. Broodingly handsome, this doll captures the character of Edward perfectly. From his chiseled features, golden eyes, and shimmering complexion, to his stylish clothing from the film, you too will swoon for this irresistible immortal!"
Hover over his face, it will enlarge and it is SCARY. Bella is generic + vapid. And sorry if my format is effed up, LJ is being grouchy.

This is purely a curious inquiry, I assure you.
If a man were to give up his seat so you, a woman, may sit down, what is your immediate reaction?
A similar situation. If a man opened a door to you, would you see it as a polite gesture or an implication you are incapable of doing so yourself?

So I'm still making my way through the Twilight series, but I had some random questions on my mind that I'm rather impatient to hear your opinion on so...here we go.
I have heard multiple times that Edward doesn't want to turn Bella into a vampire because he is worried about the state of her soul (such as she would be trapped on Earth, unable to go to heaven or whatever). First off, have I heard right? And if I have; this seems like a really deep concept that could turn into an interesting plot-line. Did Meyer pull it off? Try and fail? Or just mess it up utterly? Obviously it didn't become a problem via Breaking Dawn, but I'm just curious for the details.
I once heard a non-committal argument that since Bella became so powerful in Breaking Dawn (leaving her male counterparts in the dust when it came to transformation and powers)Twilight upped it's female power points, and may have even negated much of the anti-feminism in earlier books. Mary-Sue-ness aside, is this true? false?
Are both these points just small, positive glimmers that suffocated under all the other crap? Do they help salvage some of the decency in Twilight?
Final question; I was watching Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" the other day, and I got to the part where Gaston is trying to kill the Beast, and the Beast does nothing to save himself. I remember, even as a little girl, being disappointed in him for not even trying to live, much like I was disappointed with Bella for not trying to save herself in New Moon. Are these two cases the same or different? Better or worse? Why, and what do you think of them?
The only thing I can think of in defense of the Beast is the fact that Belle had barely been gone a day, and he had not had any time to recover. I've never had my heart broken before, but I have it on good authority that for about 3-5 days after the heartbreak, you loose your damn mind. So maybe that's what bugged me about Bella, the fact that she was doing that crazy crap for months rather than days. Either way, I am still kinda bummed with the Beasts' behavior, but if it's only one black mark on a (in my opinion) good movie, I think I can deal.
Thoughts, questions, opinions?
Uhm...I don't know if my computer is freaking out but, I can't find the option to make a cut.... D: D: D:

I may have posted this, but I can't remember.
My friends and I made a Twilight trailer.
It's far better than either of the films
if you ask me. :D

Some arguments that I have heard repeatedly in defense of the Twilight series are: "It teaches girls to wait until marriage, therefore cutting back on teen pregnancy!" "It gives girls a good role model to look up to!" "It shows girls that there is a boy out there who will love them!" "It gets girls (and some boys) to read!" Let me take on and rip to shreds every one of them.

I was happily perusing Borders when I found this:
http://www.borders.com/online/store/Tit leDetail?sku=1427641846
Judging by the title I'm thinking this book portrays her as a feminist hero, which I wouldn't doubt since she claims Bella is a feminist hero. Even if it doesn't it's sad.

Okay, so when I saw the First Bite ad two posts bellow I just had to go to bookbyyou.com and see what happens.
Apparently, ou get to see three customized scenes before you decide whether to buy the whole version with (gasp!) over ten customizable characters. So, first, you have to fill out a questionary about your hero and heroine. It's mostly insert-name-and-flashy-hair-colour here.
I find it real nice and very reflective of the romance in Twilight that they don't ask you about the characters' personalities, just their hair and eye colours! Which means that actual personalities are generic and unimportant and appearances are all that matters. Just like in Twilight!
See, people, this is the first case of marketing actually being true -- they promised it would be like Twilight, and it is! Now, I filled up the form...

( screenshot of the form, in which you get to see my Prada Google Chrome theme and discover that I'm a TV Tropes addict ) ...and, in less than a minute, the site churned out my three free scenes.
Again, they weren't lying at all! They're just like Twilight! Sickening descriptions of characters' appearance and clothes? Check. "Mysteeeriiiooouuus" male lead? Check. Clumsy heroine who needs the hero to save her from things like bookshelves? Check. Horrid prose? Check. Earth Logic? It's not there! Just Like In Twilight!
I did find it disappointing, though, that I had to pick the eye and hair colour from a drop-down meny instead of typing it in myself! I was so looking forward to a heroine with "sparkling mood-changing blue-green-gray with a purplish hint" eyes. Also, the "if you can't think of a name" suggestions all make me sick, Nick Jonas especially. Nick Jonas is bad enough without being a Meyerpire, thankyouverymuch. Here are the scenes:
( Bob and Rosalinda Meet In The Library Thanks To A Falling Bookcase )
After I took a break to go to the bathroom and retch a little, I went on to read the second scene I got.
( Rosalinda Gets Advise From His Best Friend Fitzroy )
After reading these two scenes, I realized that most urban fantasy authors must have used this site to write their books. Behold! The great secret of YA Urban Fantasy/Paranormal Romance has been uncovered!
( And finally, Bob and Rosalinda Face The Reality Of Their Relationship )
There's even the world "sparkle" in this one! This is so awesome! It's just like Twilight!
I want this for Christmas, except for Kaia, green and black for the heroine and Damien, green and blonde for the hero! That way I can totally imagine my boyfriend is a sparkly vampire!)
(yes, I do have a boyfriend called Damien, and no, he isn't the spawn of Satan. He's a photography student.)
Edited because LJ likes fucking with my coding :/

::facepalm::A while ago, I got a phone call from one of my friends. He rang me up because he'd just seen an interview with Stephenie Meyer. When asked if she'd ever thought she'd be so popular, Meyer answered that, in the beginning, she hadn't thought that she'd been a very good writer. However, she then started talking about how she now knew that she was a better writer than Rowling, whom she had admired. Rowling's certainly not one of the best writers out there, but she is above average, especially taking into consideration that her books are directed at children. The less I say about Meyer's writing, the better. This isn't the first time Meyer's gone on about how she's better than other writers or their characters and stories either. She's talked about The Princess Bride, Romeo and Juliet, and Pride and Prejudice.
Anyway, I wanted to know if anyone had a link to this particular interview? My friend doesn't know what channel or show he was watching - it was the morning and the TV was just on, and he thought he'd share it with me for a laugh.
( silliness behind teh cut )
Now share your macros with me! Please?
